There's Always Next Year

There's always next year, the mantra of the footballing optimist. A phrase that can be used to wash away any on field disappointment no matter how spectacular it may be. Even when it's said more in hope than expectation though it's a constant truth, there will always be next season. For Scottish football fans who have just sat through the ignominy of one of the most depressing and controversy laden seasons in memory it seems obvious that we would hope that the next is remembered for all the right reasons. With the intrigue of new managers, new owners and new players in the SPL next season though there's every chance it will be.

Rangers are, at the time of writing at least, something of an unknown quantity for next season. Not just a new owner but a new manager too. If Craig Whyte is still looked at with suspicion by some Rangers fans its fair to say their next manager has a more affixed place in their hearts. Ally McCoist is of course Rangers record goalscorer and a hero to the Ibrox masses. Football is littered with footballing legends who have went on to experience more lacklustre management careers but if McCoist has spent his time studiously learning from Walter Smith as his assistant over the last few seasons then this, along with the fact that he knows the current group of players inside and out should mean there is no need to worry about the sway he will hold when the season starts.
