Brand New FA Cup Prediction Game Coming Soon!

Thousands of people up and down the country, and indeed throughout the world, signed up to fantasy football and football prediction games last summer full of hope that this year was the year that they would finally be able to show off their amazing football knowledge and managerial skills. Sadly for the vast majority, myself included, things didn't quite work out that way. Sometime in the last few weeks the reality has dawned that this year will be another mid-table anti-climax - if we are lucky!

As Christmas approaches it is the time of year for all those struggling with league mediocrity to suddenly wake up and discover that it was the Cup they were interested in all along! With only two weeks to go until the 3rd round ties of The FA Cup it is time to announce the long- awaited, much anticipated, soon to be dreaded, FA Cup Prediction Game.

This FA Cup prediction game is open to anyone who wished to play. There is no need for new players to join up to the league game if they do not want to - though they are welcome to do so.

As knockout competitions require a set number of teams, this competition will begin with a group stage to sort out the wheat from the chaff, and also to magically produce  sixteen qualifiers for the last sixteen of the tournament. The group stages will see players split into eight groups, with the top two from each group qualifying for an unseeded draw for the beginning of the knockout competition.

The group stages of the competition will cover both the 3rd and 4th rounds of the cup, with the knockout stages covering the 5th round onwards.

Just as with the League game, the Cup prediction game is being hosted on the not606 football forum. Full details of the competition, how to join, and how the scoring system will work can be found on the game thread on not606

As many players as possible welcome, so give the link a click and sign up!

The Premier League Prediction Game Of Destiny And Doom!!!

'The Premier League Prediction Game Of Destiny And Doom!!!' is a results and scores prediction game based entirely on, and unashamedly ripped off from, Mark Lawrenson's predictions on the BBC Sport website. To give this game a twist, the game is played in leagues over a calandar month, with promotion and relegation at the end of every month. So each month you get to start again and aim for glory.

There are no prizes for winning this game (unless someone out there wants to provide one). This is all about the pleasure of seeing yourself gain promotion and climb through the divisions. In The Premier League Prediction Game Of Destiny And Doom you play for pride!

The scoring of the game is exactly the same as Mark Lawrenson's predictions on the BBC Sport website. Three points for guessing a correct  score, and one point for guessing the correct result (win/lose/draw). It couldn't be simpler - which is why it needed complicating. The format of the game is that the players are split up into leagues of ten, with each game played over the course of a calendar month. At the end of each month the top two from each league are promoted, replacing the bottom two of that league who are relegated. This format means that the game is reset at the beginning of each month so that nobody falls too far behind with a bad start. It also means that players can join at any stage of the season and still stand a chance of climbing the leagues. The final positions in May will be carried over to next season when the game will resume - so there is always something to play for.

Full details of how the game works, and how you can sign up and join in are in the Features section of the Football Blog Directory at:

Lawro's League Update

It has been a while since we looked at the progress that Mark Lawrenson is making in his Premier League predictions. Following his latest predictions, there will only be eight more games to play in this year's campaign. Therefore, the table is starting to take on a shape that is not going to be very different to the final outcome in May.

Perhaps in an attempt to prevent people showing his predictions in league format, he has complicated matters by predicting some cup games instead of Premier League games. To get around this problem we have had to insert the actual result for the six games affected.

As you can see from the above table (click on it for a larger view), Lawro isn't doing all that badly in some ways. He has the top five teams correct, albeit in the wrong order, and two of the teams in relegation places make up his bottom two. The stand out mistakes are Swansea in a relegation spot rather than their superb 8th place, and Wolves in a safe 9th rather than propping up the table.

Lawro Strikes Back

While the Premier League according to Lawro's Predictions may well still look very different to reality, Mark Lawrenson actually had quite a good week predicting scores and results this week.

Man Utd may still have a lead over Man City at the top of the table, Wolves, Everton and Sunderland may still be fighting over a Europa League spot with Liverpool, and Newcastle may still be avoiding a relegation spot on only goal difference, but at least things didn't get too much more distorted.

Once again, click on the image to see the table in more detail.

One other thing to point out. Quite a few of the other websites covering the Premier League according to Lawro have Swansea in a relegaton spot on only 10 points. We've checked and double checked both our own and their results and this is definitely the correct table. Hint: They may want to check the prediction for the Wolves v Swansea game earlier in the season.

Lawro Latest

The big news this week in Lawroland is that Manchester United have opened up a gap over their close rivals Manchester City at the top of the Premier League. Chelsea and Arsenal hold the remaining two Champions League spots, while Sunderland remain in contention for a Europa League place.

Alan Pardew must be preparing himself for the annual NUFC P45 as his Newcastle team collected their 9th defeat of the season at Old Trafford and now find themselves escaping a relegation spot only on goal difference. No team has lost more games this season than the happless Magpies!

Click on the image above to see in more detail.

Let's wait and see what wonders Lawro has in store for us next week!

...And Back To Lawro

By his own low standards, the great moustached one (in Lawroland its a moustache not a beard) didn't have too bad a week. In Lawroland Chelsea may have beaten the Scousers and the Potters overcome QPR, but all in all he wasn't too far out. He also failed to spot a Blackburn comeback against Wigan, but then who would have predicted refereeing like that?

Speaking of Wigan, I don't know who is scheduled to turn on their Christmas lights this year but Lawro must be in with a shout. I think Lawro, Alex McLeish and His Royal Donkiness Heskey should be locked in a cage for a fight to the death, the three of them having been recognised as the only people who could possibly have Wigan level on points with Aston Villa. The winner gets to press the big red button and illuminate the Lancashire town. Just a thought.....

Once again, click on the image below to see the full Premier League table in Lawroland.

Predictably Awful!

So here we are eleven games into the Premier League season. Manchester City sit proudly on top of the Premier league closely followed in second place by their neighbours Manchester United. No shocks there then.

However, Liverpool are showing that their resurgence under King Kenny is still going strong as they remain unbeaten and occupy a Champion's League spot. Everton and Wolves are keeping up their good start to the season as they remain in contention for a Europa League place. Meanwhile Wigan sit safely in mid table, three places above a struggling Newcastle United who last time out suffered their seventh defeat of the season.

What alternative reality are we living in? The world according to Mark Lawrenson of course. We have totalled up all of the predictions from Lawro's predictions on the BBC website and turned them into a league table. So if you've ever wondered whether your team really do suffer from a Lawro bias then click the image below to see how his predictions compare to reality.

We will be keeping tabs on Lawro's predictions throughout the season so be sure to come back for another visit to see just how badly he is doing!
