The Dawn of PSG's New Golden Era

Paris Saint-Germain's status in world football belies their humble history. Surprisingly, the club was only formed in 1970 as the result of the merger between Paris FC and Stade Saint-Germain. This makes them relative youngsters not just in world football but even in French football where veterans Bordeaux, Le Havre, and Marseille have all long since passed their centenaries.

The Parc des Princes side, which represents both Paris and nearby Saint-Germain-en-Laye, have made huge strides since their formation and have been heavily supported by people keen to see a big club fly the capital's colours once again. After only 4 years PSG had made it to the top tier of French football, Ligue 1, where they have remained ever since. The Parisians first began lifting trophies in 1982 with the first of their eight French Cup successes, and embarked upon a Golden Era in the 1990's. This decade of success saw the club collect 8 significant trophies including a League championship and the 1996 UEFA Cup Winner's Cup title to make them and Marseille the only two French clubs to have won a major European trophy.
